What kind of work can I upload to my portfolio?

By Laura SJ FD, written 1589016104

Summary:

This article covers the following:

  • Images that can be uploaded to different account types on PurplePort (and exceptions to this)
  • Some reasons why different account types are important
  • How to share work on PurplePort that is not relevant to your current account type

Account types on PurplePort

PurplePort is a portfolio hosting and social networking website for various creatives. Your PurplePort portfolio is a collection of your work. It is used to showcase your style and method of work and to demonstrate your own ability to others who may potentially want to work with you. It's a sample of what you can do and what you have to offer. This means that all images uploaded to your portfolio must show work completed by you.

We have different account types available on site which cover most areas of work. Although there are some restrictions for creating multiple accounts/account types, in general, anyone can create a new account for any account type should they wish to. See Multiple accounts and changing account types on PurplePort for more about creating additional accounts on PurplePort.

Your account is not a space to upload images of anything you like. Each account type should upload images relevant to that account type.

For the following account types:

  • Photographer - You must be the photographer who took the image
  • Model - You must be the model in the image
  • Make-up Artist - You must have completed the make-up in the image
  • Photoshop Wizard (Retoucher) - You must have completed the editing work in the image
  • Shoot Stylist - You must have completed the styling in the image
  • Hair Stylist - You must have completed the hair styling in the image
  • Artist/Painter- You must be the artist who created the work in the image
  • Designer (Clothing Designer) - You must be the designer of the work in the image
  • Studio - The images must have been created in your studio
  • Tutor (Photography) - You must be the photographer who took the image

Our Image Upload Guidelines provide further information about images that can be uploaded to PurplePort.

Accounts are designed to be used by one person and for one use only. For example, if you create an account as a hair stylist, you should upload images to your portfolio showing your work as a hair stylist, and you should use your account to advertise/arrange work as a hairstylist. You should not upload images of your landscape paintings to your hairstylist portfolio or upload anyone else's work as a hairstylist either. You should not use this account to advertise or arrange work for anything other than your work as a hairstylist.

Images not relevant to your account type will be deleted, and images that show work completed by someone else could get your account banned from PurplePort (e.g. due to copyright infringement). This applies to all account types on PurplePort.

We've created PurplePort this way to make it easy to search for others to work with and to leave appropriate feedback for that work.

Separate account types make it easier for other members to (amongst other things):

  • Browse the type of work you've completed for that area from your portfolio
  • Check the kind of references you've received for that area of work
  • Search for other members to work within that particular area

Specific exceptions when using albums

There are some instances where uploading an image that does not show your own work is permitted.

These are as follows:

  • Uploading images to use for selling purposes. Uploading images into an album to enable you to use those images in the Wanted/For Sale or For Rent groups. These can include images of items you have for sale or rent, such as clothing, props, or other items.
  • Uploading images of things that aid shoots. Uploading images into an album enables you to use those images to show equipment, locations, props, clothing, etc, which you can use for shoots.

For either of these cases, images should always be uploaded to an album and appropriately marked (e.g. "Items for sale", "Locations I can shoot in", etc.). Uploading images directly into your main portfolio should be avoided, and these images must not be added to Recent Images, set as your avatar or cover image.

For more information about uploading images into albums, see The PurplePort Guide to Image Albums. If you upload an image and accidentally show it in your main portfolio, make sure you hide it (see How to show or hide images from your portfolio for more about this).

Why are separate account types important?

Besides the points already mentioned above, below are some key areas in which separate account types are important.

Images

If you are looking at an account type's portfolio, you should fully expect that all of those images are relevant to that account type.

For example, if you look through the portfolio of a photographer, you would expect all of those images to have been taken by that photographer. It would be unfair to expect anyone looking at a photographer's portfolio to have to check which images they've tagged themselves as a photographer and which they've tagged other people as the photographer.

Likewise, you should only tag your account type in images relevant to your account type. For example, if you have a model account, you should not tag yourself as a photographer in any of your images or be tagged as a photographer in anyone else's images.

References

If you are looking at an account type's portfolio, you should fully expect that all of the references are relevant to that account type.

For example, if you look at the references on a make-up artist's account, you would expect all of those references would be for their work as a make-up artist. It would be unfair to expect anyone looking at someone's references to sift through each one and work out which references are for the work relevant to their account type. It would be disappointing to discover that some of those references are for their work as a model or a photographer when their account type is a make-up artist. Of all of their positive references, there may only be a small number of references relevant to their work as a make-up artist. This is especially frustrating for those who use our Search feature specifically to look for other members based on the number of references they have.

Sharing work on PurplePort that is not relevant to your current account type

You've created some amazing work that you want to share with other members of the PurplePort community. If this work is not relevant to your current account type, there are two ways you can share this work on PurplePort.

Create a new account using the appropriate account type

The advantage of this means that you can:

  • Upload images to PurplePort using your new account type
  • Share images in the Groups, via private messages, and other places
  • Advertise work (e.g. Castings or Events) using your new account type

For example, if you want to upload images that you've edited, but you don't have a Photoshop wizard account, create a new account as a Photoshop wizard and start sharing your work on PurplePort (and also start gaining work from it).  Similarly, if you want to upload images where you were the model, but you don't have a model account, create a new account as a Model and start sharing your work on PurplePort (and also start gaining work from it).

There are many benefits to creating a new account for this. Not only can you advertise your work via our Castings or Events features, but you can also upload your images directly to PurplePort (using your new account type). To create another account, go to the logged-out homepage and click Join. All PurplePort accounts require a unique email address, so you must use a different email address from your existing account. You can link multiple accounts on PurplePort, enabling you to switch between these accounts without the hassle of logging in and out of each one. For more information about this, see How to link accounts.

By uploading images to your portfolio using your new account type, sharing images in the Groups is also made simpler via copying/pasting image URLs. These images will be clickable links, and the image stats (e.g. loves and tagged members) will visible to others. Other members can love your images, comment on them, share them, collect them and use them for inspiration, and your image could even be added to the Front Page Image (FPI) CollectionFor information about how to add images to group posts, casting calls, messages, and other places on PurplePort, see How to add images to castings, group posts, messages, portfolio notes, etc..

Upload your images somewhere else online

The advantage of this means that you can:

  • Share images in the Groups, via private messages, and other places

Creating a new account to share some of your other work isn't for everyone, but there is nothing to stop you from uploading this work somewhere else (e.g. on social media) and using the URL to those images online for sharing your work in group posts, via private message, and other places (using the Insert/edit image option). For information about how to add images to group posts, messages, and other places on PurplePort, see How to add images to castings, group posts, messages, portfolio notes, etc..
