Pandora was the first woman fashioned by the gods from earth and water and given gifts by each of them. From Zeus she received a box with the instructions to guard it and never to open it. Driven by curiosity she did open it and released all the evils of the world. By the time she understood what was happening and closed it again everything had escaped except 'Hope'.
