References for Selva

“I’m going to be wearing purple trousers”, she said. I couldn’t hide my scepticism. “don’t worry, you’re gonna like it” (or words to that effect). This exchange perfectly encapsulates the strength and confidence of this woman. i am looking for models with character to shoot with and boy, did I hit the jackpot here.

Normally we have to work together (the model and I) to get the character that I have seen expressed. Usually it’s not a particularly difficult task but it does take some effort on both our parts. With Selva, I got served her character without any need for work on my part. By the end of the shoot, I realised that I had only scratched the surface - this woman has real depth to her and she showed it to me - my challenge was to capture it and do her justice.

I must admit that there was a small amount of trepidation when I first thought about working with Selva. She has a tough exterior (part of what attracted me to her in the first place). And she is a tough woman but she is also a very warm, friendly and dare I say (she may not appreciate it) even sweet person. Working with her was effortless.

The most surprising thing for me was just how much sensuality and sexiness Selva expressed - I had seen it in some of the photos on her profile but I slightly discounted this aspect of her (remember she’s a tough woman who practices Muay thai) but she is incredibly erotic. This term is carelessly used to describe any kind of display of sexiness. For me, for something to be erotic implies control in the deployment of sensuality and sexuality. This was a masterclass. Everything from her style (her choice of clothes was deliberate, original, and powerfully yet subtly sexy) to her posing and especially her facial expression suggested a powerful, deep and complex personality and sexuality. I was very grateful to her for so readily showing herself to me in the way she did.

There are so many aspects to this woman that I didn’t want to stop shooting her. I found myself struggling sometimes - I knew I had in front of me the embodiment of what I am always looking to shoot but I felt like I had arrived ill-prepared. Like the time she gently gave me an obvious lighting tip whilst I stood there dumbfounded. It’s like going shopping for fireworks and being handed a stick of dynamite. I will be lighting this fuse slowly- If I get the chance, i will shoot this woman over and over and over again.

There’s so much that springs to mind but i must somehow bring this reference to an end - the range of her expression, for example - the Selva I got was different from the ones in her portfolio, and I got many Selvas - one of them was a classical Spanish beauty the other was a gamine beauty, and then a queer (it’s emblazoned on her arm, you can’t miss it) beauty, and also a soft motherly beauty. I feel when writing this reference like I felt shooting her - there’s so much to see. As a photographer my appetite was sated but I am still hungry. Thank you Selva.

Keep an eye on Maku. She’s going to be very popular. She has that Latin beauty, great skin and those awesome dreads. She’s also already a very good model. She arrived on time, was organised, takes direction well and picks up stuff really quickly. Also, also, she’s a lovely person to work with. I’m already thinking through ideas for our next shoot.
