Where are the stars?

“There are no stars.” Jake mumbled. Maybe he needed to say something to her, maybe he was just talking to himself.
“They are still there.” Stephanie replied She felt she had to say something. “It's the clouds. With a clear sky, you'd be able to....” She tailed off, this was sounding silly.
“They are not there anyway.” said Jake “When you see them, they were there, but the light takes so long to get here, they aren't there now. Some of those stars are dead already, but even... even the ones that are still up there somewhere are so far away, the universe is mostly empty. It's an illusion when you can see the stars.”
Jake looked down. It seemed for a moment like he was trying not to cry. “We are so small and... brief. Hanging on to this tiny planet falling through vast empty space. It's... terrifying.”
