Gothic Image maybe because the site is about the models earning money not about the photographers earning money so I guess a bias towards what the models consider an important t and c for them. I think 😏

I was hinting more at the thought that perhaps models wouldn't need that policy if they didn't have photographers cancelling on them at short notice?

Gothic Image well from the amount of stories I hear from models about cold feet photographers, I felt it was obvious?

But we don't hear them complaining on here, do we?  :-)

Gothic Image Lol.

Maybe not *here* but as I said, I've heard from people enough to suggest they're annoyed about it. :)

Personally I feel everyone is as bad as each other... 😆

I suspect you're probably right!  :-)

Now come on. We photographers are the big important people around here. Models are here only for our benefit and should bow and scrape to us and be grateful for any morsel that we throw in their direction. You should know by now.

[Under Directive 45b/5 I'm obliged to point out that those comments were tongue-in-cheek.]

Surely not?  ;-)

Heh. Personally I look at it this way. I have a ton of opinions on "the industry" (ugh) that are often best talked about in person with people face to face. 😆

Other than being as careful as you can with who you hire, I don’t think there’s realistically much that a photographer can do about a model not turning up on the day. And even the most diligent and professional model might wake up ill or have to deal with a family emergency or some other genuine reason for having to cancel.

Yes, it’s annoying, but as others have said it’s actually quite a rare occurrence. I don’t think it’s realistic or practical to expect compensation from the model - any more than it’s realistic to expect a delivery company to compensate you for lost wages after you’ve stayed at home all day for a delivery that didn’t arrive.

For most people, the cost of hiring a studio for a day isn’t material. And if the location costs are going to run into thousands of pounds then, as someone else suggested, I think I’d hire two models and hope they don’t both get ill. If I were really risk averse, I’d also insist that they travel to the location separately!

I like this idea and if they both turn up you can pick the one you like most and send the other one back.

Gothic Image We don't, but generally speaking models, with a small number of exceptions, do not use the forums.

Obviously the other thing is they're the supplier, we are - nine times out of ten - the customer.

JamesMt142 - James is correct. Very few models on PurplePort even use the forums. I ask all the models that I shoot, that are from her, and except for the odd one or two, they don’t use the forums. So it will always seem like the male photographers are always bitching about the models.

And with that being the case they will continue to shun it…as most photographers do too.

Models communicate very well with each other on Facebook groups....

If you hire a lawyer, accountant, financial adviser, plumber, electrician, gardener or builder, you don't expect them to compensate you if they don't turn up.  So you mitiagte the risk by seeking references, Googling them in advance, seeing if they're full or part-time, keeping in contact with them prior to the appointment and having a contingency plan in case they don't turn up.  In practice, you wouldn't expect any of these professionals to pay you direct or consequential losses if they don't turn up (or if they turn up but don't perform well on the day).  It's annoying but, in reality, I don't think there's much you can do about it.

Haven't read the whole thread....... but .I know a very successful landlord and accountant and is quite happy to invoice trade people who don't turn up, also BT, British Gas etc . If they fail to pay he takes them to the small claims court for compensation  and wins.

Huw - I will have to take your word for that, Huw, as I don’t have Facebook. Thank you for pointing that out.

winning the case  is probably because they don't deem it financially viable to present with a lawyer for a small claim.
it's easier just to pay it, and write it off ?  (and hope the other party doesn't present themselves on the day?)

i am assuming that the loser of the case is liable to some costs
but dont know the rules of small claims courts, or any courts.
